Since 1976, when the US government officially designated February as Black History Month, this annual observance has honored the excellence and achievements of African Americans. In February 2025, Pepperdine will celebrate with a series of events showcasing African American culture, history, and contributions. The scheduled events are as follows:
Wednesday, February 5 | 7:30 PM | Smothers Theatre
The Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts will host Cirque Kalabant茅, showcasing a blend of African music, dance, and acrobatics. Created by Yamoussa Bangoura, Afrique en Cirque is inspired by the daily rhythms of Guinea, celebrating the beauty, strength, and artistry of African culture. This dynamic performance goes beyond stunning visuals, costumes, and staging鈥攊t electrifies the stage with breathtaking acrobatics, gravity-defying feats, and mesmerizing human pyramids. Set to the infectious sounds of live Afro-Jazz, percussion, and kora, this unforgettable show captures the spirit, agility, and joy of Africa鈥檚 youth.
February 6, 12, 19, and 27 | 6 PM (PST) | Virtual
Organized by the Graduate School Education and Psychology's (GSEP) Center for Global Partnerships and Learning, this series will feature discussions on February 6, 12, 19, and 27, focusing on diverse aspects of Black experiences and storytelling. This year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淩esilience Through Reclaiming Our Narrative,鈥 will explore the history and significance of Black History Month, the vital role of the Black Church in preserving Black stories, and the personal narratives of faculty and students. The event will conclude with a keynote address by Erlanger A. Turner, GSEP associate professor of psychology and director of the Race and Cultural Experiences Research Lab, who will discuss Black mental health and the experiences of Black men.

Alumni Panel: Careers Beyond the Courtroom

Experience an inspiring alumni panel showcasing diverse career paths beyond traditional legal practice. Hear from Pepperdine alumni who have pursued exciting roles in policy, entrepreneurship, nonprofit leadership, and academia.
In honor of Black History Month, Pepperdine Libraries will offer a selection of books about the Civil Rights Movement, honoring the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation.
